Commodity as Memory

Death as eternal, the arrival of the ultimate utopian fantasy of either a wholeness in union with god or total emptiness (if we reject some notion of recirculation). But on the material dimension, there is the necropolis, remembrance of the dead through the acquisition of burial spaces, graves and its emblems. This draws parallels to the commodity dream world foregrounded by Walter Benjamin. As death commodities, it is easy to say that all graves are outmoded. Never less… the old sits in with the new. Several plots on seemingly freshly dug soil… others forgotten and decaying. Even in the realm of the dead, there is an inconsistency… an irregular array of memories like a plot of grass rather than a linear historical trajectory.
